Saint Marys Hospital, Mayo Medical Center
The expansion and renovation of Saint Marys Hospital at the Mayo Medical Centre in Rochester Minnesota included the development of a “children’s hospital within a hospital” — all facilities for inpatient pediatric programs, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care. Carlyle Design Associates worked closely with a multi-disciplinary group of staff and family representatives and with Henningson Durham Richardson Architects of Omaha, Nebraska to articulate design intent and to provide interior concept and design development for all pediatric environments — from lobby to patient room.
Design solutions were required to successfully integrate old building with new and to create a distinct identity for the children’s environments while respecting established Mayo facility ‘standards.’ Environments provide lasting value and appeal through the use of natural materials like wood, stone, ceramic tile and glass. Allusions to nature appear in a lobby fountain, in floor patterns, and in railings. Spaces throughout are enriched with details to discover and with the integration of extensive art works and interactive play opportunities. Special consideration was given to family gathering and waiting spaces, playrooms for different age groups, acoustic ceiling treatments and to variable lighting solutions.
