Ronald McDonald House Ottawa has created an inviting family room within the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Consulting with a committee of Ronald McDonald House and CHEO staff, along with a family advisory committee, Carlyle Design Associates designed a thoughtful, compact space that takes full advantage of daylight and expansive fifth floor views. The suite of spaces can accommodate quiet respite as well as special gatherings in the flexible living/lounge, kitchen and eating areas. Laundry facilities, an accessible bathroom, a quiet room for activities like breast-feeding and private conversation, and workspace for volunteers complete the amenities.
While meeting stringent requirements for durability, housekeeping and infection control, warm materials, cheerful colours and comfortable, contemporary furnishings appeal to all ages and are an antidote to clinical environments. A steam-bent wood ceiling installation made by studio furniture maker Karen McBride along with framed works of children’s art reinforce zoning of the space and introduce more out-of-the-hospital elements of art and delight.
